Change is possible,

and it comes from the

power in people

Who we are

ActionAid is a global movement of people working together to further human rights and defeat poverty for all.

ActionAid has worked in Uganda since 1982 and currently has a presence with offices and staff in 15 districts. We prioritize works with minority groups like women, children and people living in extreme poverty.

We want to see a just, fair and sustainable world, in which everybody enjoys the right to a life of dignity, and freedom from poverty and oppression.

Our Mission

To achieve social justice, gender equality, and poverty eradication by working with people living in extreme poverty and exclusion, their communities, people’s organizations, activists, social movements and their supporters.

Our Vision

A just, equitable and sustainable world in which every person enjoys the right to a life of dignity, freedom from poverty and all forms of oppression.

Strategic Goal and Theory of Change.

If ActionAid International Uganda supports people living in poverty and exclusion especially women and young people, to realize that they have inherent rights to a life of dignity; and if they are supported to organizeand take action individually and collectively for sustainable change to their condition and position, then we will achieve social justice, gender equality and poverty eradication.

Our theory of change explains how we believe this desired long-term change can be achieved and the necessary preconditions for this to happen:

Social justice, including gender equality and poverty eradication, shall be secured over time when:

  • People are supported to realize that they have inherent rights to enjoy and the ability to claim these rights from those who hold power in all its dimensions - visible, invisible, or hidden.
  • People living in poverty and exclusion are supported to organize individually and collectively to demand greater accountability and fulfillment of their rights.
  • Action for positive and sustainable change is championed and led by women, young people, and others directly affected by injustice.

Our Approach.

  • AAIU focuses its interventions on people living in extreme poverty, especially women, youth, and children.
  • AAIU uses feminist, human-rights-based and participatory principles, and analyses.
  • AAIU works with partners.
  • AAIU engages in campaigns and collective action.
  • AAIU Strengthens interactions with State institutions by undertaking joint actions where necessary and creating mutual learning and accountability spaces with State actors.
  • AAIU applies a culturally sensitive approach to programming.

Where we work

ActionAid International Uganda has a physical presence in 15 districts, in addition to collaborative work with our partners, which extends to 39 districts, with a deliberate focus on areas where the poor and vulnerable populations are concentrated in Eastern, Northern, West Nile, Central, and some districts in the Mid-Western Regions of Uganda. The operations are in 7 Local Rights Programmes (LRPs) with project extensions to a few districts not directly under the LRPs.
