ActionAid International Uganda Honoured for outstanding GBV Shelters

Angel Akoth, the GBV Coordinator at ActionAid International receives her award from Hon. Peace Mutuzo

ActionAid International Uganda(AAIU) was honoured by the Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development on 25 Nov 2024 for delivering critical services to gender-based violence survivors through GBV shelters. The award ceremony took place at the launch of the 16th Day of Activism against gender-based violence at Hotel Africana.

Angella Akoth, the GBV Coordinator, received the award on behalf of AAIU. She highlighted the role of frontline staff in the fight against GBV: “I would like to thank the frontline staff for their unwavering support to the survivors of GBV across the various locations. This award is for you!”

Xavier Ejoyi, the AAIU Country Director, expressed gratitude for the awards.
Thank you, Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, for recognizing AAIU’s contribution to responding to and preventing SGBV in Uganda. We dedicate this award to women and girls who endure emotional and physical pain and denial yet are resilient in rebuilding their lives,” said Ejoyi.

AAIU runs several GBV shelters in the country that provide comprehensive SGBV services. Last year, AAIU reached out to over 6000 people through the shelters.

During the launch of 16 Days of activism against GBV, Hon. Peace Mutuzo, the Minister of Gender Labour and Social Development, noted that 55% of women face economic and physical violence.
