Sabiny Safe Male Circumcision Takes Center Stage in Sebei Region

ActionAid International Uganda, with funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) collaborated with Sebei Cultural leaders to officially launch Sapiny Safe Male Circumcision in the Sebei Sub region. The momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the region.
The launch, held in Bukwo district, drew over 1,000 people, including cultural leaders, political leaders, representatives from NGOs and local communities. The ceremony was a testament to the collective commitment to ending FGM and promoting alternative rites of passage.
“In 1969, cultural ceremonies were interrupted by ethnic groups fighting and national insecurity. Circumcision resurfaced after NRM took over power in 1986,” said Morris Kiplangat | the principal community development officer, Bukwo District
Peter Kissa, the Sabiny Cultural Leader, reaffirmed his dedication to fighting harmful practices against women and girls. "We will continue to work tirelessly to protect the rights and dignity of our girls and women," he pledged.
Sam Ononge, a project officer with ActionAid, emphasized that the launch of Sapiny Safe Male Circumcision is a crucial step towards ending FGM. "With the community on board, we can ensure that FGM cutters will no longer take advantage of our girls," Sam explained”.
Coinciding with the World Aids Day, the RDC of Kapchorwa emphasized testing for HIV and during circumcision, one razor should be used for only one person, and by 2030, the HIV should be no more in the region and country
The launch also highlighted the importance of collaborative development and alternative rites of passage as lasting solutions. Young women and girls, cultural leaders, and community members are leading conversations about alternative rites of passage, securing a brighter future for the next generation.
As one of the attendees noted, "This launch is a beacon of hope for our girls and women. We are committed to working together to create a society where every girl can thrive and reach her full potential."
