BREAKING THE SILENCE; AMUDAT ONE STOP CENTER LEADS THE FIGHT AGAINST Female AND GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

Emmanuel Ochieng, a legal officer with ActionAid International, speaks to a team of Male Action Group members

In Amudat district, Male Agent Groups (MAGs) and FGM surveillance teams are collaborating to end harmful practices. On July 18, 2024, MAGs tipped off authorities about a suspected Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) case, leading to a swift response and the arrest of the perpetrator.

Unfortunately, the victim had already undergone the procedure, resulting in severe bleeding. The MAGs played a crucial role in this case, demonstrating their commitment to eradicating FGM and other forms of gender-based violence.

This incident highlights the ongoing struggle against FGM despite the implementation of the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act.

In a similar case, in 2021, a woman called Nangiro died because of severe bleeding following forced FGM in Amudat.

The Male Champions' work has been instrumental in raising awareness about GBV, child marriage, FGM, and teenage pregnancy within their communities. They serve as foot soldiers, handling cases, making referrals, and resolving some issues within their jurisdiction. This case exemplifies the impact of their efforts, as they worked tirelessly to secure the victim and apprehend the culprit.

The tragic outcome of this incident underscores the need for continued advocacy and action against FGM. The Male Champions' dedication to this cause is crucial in bringing change and ensuring victims' justice.

Their work, in collaboration with local authorities and organizations like ActionAid International Uganda, is vital in creating a safer, more equitable community for all.
